Tragedy: Six Teens Drown Attemping To Save One Ano...
This is such a sad story. On Monday, 6 teens drowned while attempting to save each other in Louisiana’s Red River.
The Shreveport teens from at least two families drowned in the Red River after they were playing in shallow water then stepped off a ledge into an 18-foot sinkhole.
The victims, who ranged from 13 to 18 years old, died while trying to save one another.
“They were out here with some adults. But unfortunately, neither the children nor the adults could swim,” Shreveport Assistant Fire Chief Fred Sanders told the Associated Press.
A seventh teenager, a 14-year-old, was rescued. Authorities said they would hold a news conference on Tuesday to give more details about the deaths.
An emergency crew arrived after police received a call around 6:30 p.m. about one person drowning.
It took officials approximately 10 minutes to find the sinkhole, and that’s when they learned that there were multiple drowning victims. By 10:30 p.m., all the bodies were recovered.
Marilyn Robinson, a friend of the victims, witnessed as the five males and one female disappeared under the water. She said a big group of friends and family, including 20 kids, had gotten together to have a nice time.
“They were yelling ‘Help me, help me. Somebody please help me,’ Robinson told the Shreveport Times. She added she did not know how to swim. “It was nothing I could do but watch them drown one by one.”
The area is a popular hot-spot to picnic, fish and go wading.
Sanders aid the city had never experienced a tragedy of this magnitude.
“It’s devastating,” he said. – Source
I myself, love the water & I almost drowned as a child, but til this day, I still don’t know how to swim. This story honestly makes me want to go get signed up for swimming lessons. I think its becoming even more important that we learn how to swim, to help prevent such tragedies. My thoughts and prayers go out to both families of the teens who were lost in this tragedy.

Just Terrible: 13 Year Old Shot 22 Times
I wasn’t planning to do any posts until next week, but THIS story needed to be posted…
A neighbor in the 11500 block of South Perry Avenue said he saw a gunman stand over Robert Freeman and continue firing into the boy’s body shortly after 8 p.m.
“They said they found 22 holes in my baby’s body,” said the boy’s mother, Theresa Lumpkin as she was comforted by the boy’s father in front of her house.
The boy’s father said the gunman wore a mask and fired into a crowd. “My son was the only one got hit,” said Robert Freeman Sr. “I don’t understand how no one seen anything.”
This morning, Lumpkin walked down the block to the spot where her son was killed, marked with dark red blood.“My baby was just lying there. He tried to get up. He tried to fight for his mama. He tried to fight for his life,” Lumpkin said.
She said Robert was leaning against a car with friends when he was shot, and believes her son’s death was case of mistaken identity. She said he had only lived on the block for three months.
She said her son was going to be an eighth grader at Oglesby Elementary School and was spending the summer playing basketball in his backyard and riding his bicycle with other kids.
Lumpkin said he was mowing lawns to make a little extra cash.
Freeman Sr. said his son “had the biggest smile you’d ever see on a child. (It) hurts right now, hurts.”
Robert was pronounced dead at 10:09 p.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
No one was in custody this morning. Calumet Area detectives were investigating.
Why in the world is a 13 year old being shot 22 times? Yes, I said a thirteen year old CHILD was shot twenty-two times.. I don’t know what this baby did, but he didn’t deserve to die that way…. This is the type of world WE live in, folks!

Sad: 11 Yr. Old Ends Her Own Life
An 11 year old girl committed suicide by hanging herself with a belt on Thursday night, and the cause was bullying. The young girl kept a diary, which is where she stated that she had been bullied. This story really got to me, because I myself had been bullied throughout my school grade years.
Police are investigating whether an 11-year-old girl’s suicide is the result of bullying at the school she attended, a police spokesman said Friday.
The girl, who attended St. Anastasia Catholic School in Fort Pierce, was found by her parents Thursday night in her bedroom closet, said Officer Tom Nichols, police spokesman.
“She had a diary,” Nichols said. “There are entries in her diary where it indicated she was being bullied at school.”
Nichols said the girl’s parents found her about 11:30 p.m., hanging in her closet with a belt wrapped around her neck. The girl’s father lifted her up and her mother tore down the shelf.
Nichols declined to identify the girl or go into details about the diary entries. The girl did not leave a suicide note.

On Oprah: Monique’s Family
A couple of years back, actress Monique revealed that she was sexually molested by her brother as a child. Recently after her breath-taking role in the movie “Precious”, she went more into detail about her abuse. Monique stated that the only apology she had ever received from her brother was, “If you feel like I did something to you, I’m sorry..”
Yesterday, Monique’s family appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show to discuss the molestation by her older brother Gerald Imes, and so that he could apologize to Monique (even though she wasn’t at the show). They also stated that they want to bring the family back together & would like for everything to be the way it used to be.
As I watched Monique’s family speak with Oprah, I began to understand & feel her pain. What stood out to me, was how her parents handled the problem, when Monique spoke out about being molested. They say Gerald was put out of the house, but I don’t feel enough action was taken. I understand that the Mother & Father felt torn because Monique & Gerald were both their children, but they should’ve helped Monique; not just ignored it. Not once did I hear them say that they sought help or therapy for Monique.
However, what they did was something a lot of other families do: They swept it under the rug. They wanted to FORGET about the Molestation & pretend that it never occurred… That seems to be the main reason that she doesn’t speak to them today.
One of Monique’s other brothers commented on the statement about her calling Gerald being a “Monster”, saying that Monique was lying because she & Gerald still carried on a ‘Brother-Sister’ relationship, even after the molestation… Even though she was able to still speak with Gerald and be around him, that doesn’t excuse the fact that she was still hurting inside. In most cases, Monique was probably doing it to keep her family happy, but no matter what, those thoughts were still in the back of her head.
What Monique’s family fails to understand is that, no matter how old the situation is, Monique will NEVER forget about being molested. Even if she does forgive, she won’t forget. Being molested won’t leave her memory. She probably doesn’t communicate with them, because she’s tired of feeling as if her emotions & pain don’t matter. Maybe she couldn’t continue faking, or fighting a losing battle, and just can’t take it anymore.
Monique’s family has gone so many years with trying to avoid this problem, that when Monique wound up speaking out publicly, it blew up in their face…Well, you know what the saying is: What is done in the dark will come to light.
